Who are you a fan of?

Who are you a fan of?

Is it a sports team or an athlete? Is it a musician or a band or a singer? Is it an author? Or maybe it’s a type of movie or book genre? Or is it an activity or a skill you enjoy? Or is it a season or a type of weather? Or could it be a type of food or a restaurant?

What about you? Are you a fan of you? Are you a fan of your job? Your family? Your kids? Your house or yard? A friend? Your parents? A project you’re working on? What would it take for you to be a fan of any of those things?

How good does it feel to buy a jersey of your favorite player, or go to a movie you’ve been impatiently waiting for the release of, or to have that dessert?

What if you felt that same way about you? What if you could feel that same feeling with whatever it was that you were doing right now, or felt that level of satisfaction when you got in the car at the end of your work day, or even felt a rush when you saw yourself in the mirror, knowing what you’ve accomplished? What would it take to get you there?

We put energy and emotion into what we’re a fan of. We sit up straight, lean in, ask and answer more clearly, pick up on signals, and track smaller adjustments when we’re emotionally invested and when we care about the outcome. Our sense-of-self can get a boost when our team wins a big game, or our favorite song starts playing, or when we can talk about our favorite show. What if you did that for yourself, or your kids, or your projects, or your colleagues, or a hobby you decided to start or invest in. What if you were a fan, of you?
