We’re Better Together.
We’re better together. Not just you and me, but everyone around us too. You might not believe me, but it’s true. We’re better together.
It’s how we’re made and how we’re most successful. It’s a truth about being human no matter how much you might not want to believe it or really wish that there was an exception, or believe that it was only for certain people. We are better together.
There’s an African proverb that says, if you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. Speed can be helpful sometimes, but even those accomplishments that are leaps depend on others to help carry that message forward and help it to last. We’re better together. There’s just no way around it.
When someone does something truly remarkable, we want to celebrate and awe at their success and their individual ability. We tend to think, I could never do that. Wow, they’re talented. Or even, they’re special - I could never do what they did. But if you really look at the individual, you’ll see the circles of people who helped get them to where they are seemingly standing alone…except, even though they look alone, they’re not.
Pick someone, anyone, show me their seemingly individual accomplishment and I can walk out the circles of people who made the moment or the accomplishment possible. This isn’t to say that individuals aren’t important, they are. An individual can be the catalyst that takes an ordinary situation and makes it become history defining. But no matter what or who you pick, they didn’t get there alone.
So who has helped you get where you are? Or is there someone who you can help be all they can be?
Just like every skill we talk about here, there are action steps we can practice to make Better Together not just something that we’re grateful for, but so that it’s something we work on. Being better together takes TRUST
Time - our most precious resource
Reliability in our actions
Understanding of those around us
managing the Storylines we tell ourselves and create of others
and the willingness to Take a step forward because there’s no better way to say it. “We’re better together.”
